"Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch"

Peace on earth will never come in a happily ever after moment. There will always be conflicts between individual people and between nations. But it would be much easier to create and maintain a more peaceful, just and sustainable world, if there were institutions and channels and tools to make it easier to more fairly and justly work out our differences, and to discuss mutually beneficial ways to work together on shared problems and interests. Today the United Nations includes representatives from nearly every country in the world. It provides a forum for nations to air their grievances, and the opportunities to work together for their shared interests. Although flawed, it represents humanity's intention to strive towards becoming a peaceful community of nations. The concept of creating this ideal state of an interconnected, interdependent global community is not a new one. In 1795, German Philosopher Immanuel Kant outlined the idea of a 'league of nations' in his monumental work, Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch. He did not advocate creating a single world government, but instead proposed that all nations should be free, respect their citizens' natural rights, and welcome foreign visitors as equal and fellow rational beings. This would help control conflicts and promote peace between countries, thus creating a peaceful community of nations.
