MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

At the Millennium Summit in September 2000 at the United Nations, ALL of the world's leaders agreed "to spare no effort" in working to fulfill the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. These shared goals help us take a giant step forward in global cooperation to create a more peaceful, just and sustainable world. Help join the campaign to remind our leaders about their PROMISE.

Goal #1 - Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger • 1.2 billion people live on less than $1 a day • Every day 800 million people go to bed hungry • Every day 28,000 children die from poverty
Goal #2 - Achieve universal primary education • 115 million children are not in school • 133 million young people cannot read or write
Goal #3 - Promote gender equality and empower women • 2/3 of the world ’s illiterate are female • Employment for women is 30% lower than for men
Goal #4 - Reduce child mortality • Measles kills 1/2 million children each year • 70% of deaths before age 5 are caused by malnutrition or disease and are preventable
Goal #5- Improve maternal health • 500,000 women die from complications during pregnancy and childbirth each year
Goal #6 - Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases • 5 million new HIV infections each year • 1 million die from malaria each year • 2 million die from tuberculosis each year
Goal #7 - Ensure environmental sustainability •1.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water •2 million children die every year from infections spread by dirty water or improper sanitation
Goal #8 - Develop a global partnership for development •Developed countries pledged to give 0.7 % of their national income in aid. Only 5 countries are living up to the commitment; the USA is giving less then 0.2 % You can help. Together we can convince our governments to honor the pledge they made to meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
