Heroes for a Better World

John Denver
(1943-1997)

American Singer-Songwriter, Environmentalist
1990 World Ecology Award

birthdate: December 31
birthplace:
Roswell, New Mexico

John Denver was well known for recording 25 albums and starring in several movies, but his passion for the environment was equally apparent. His music celebrated the wonder of nature and continues to be a source of inspiration for the environmental movement. He started the Windstar Foundation in 1977 "to inspire individuals to make responsible choices and take direct actions to achieve a peaceful and environmentally sustainable future." John Denver's passion for a better world also included speaking out against war, nuclear power and oil drilling in Alaska, for alternative energy, and helping to end world hunger. His song "I Want To Live" was written for the Hunger Project and became the group's anthem. Although John Denver died while piloting a small experimental plane, the foundation he started and his music carry on his vision of working for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world.
