they need is simply the right thing to do.

And a vision which focuses action on the causes
and consequences of the health conditions that create
and perpetuate poverty.

leadership has to be focused on some very radical
ideas that only we as 21st Century people can talk
about: making sure people have a livelihood, making
sure people receive a living wage, making sure the
environment, the Mother Earth, is embraced and cherished
and not destroyed. Making sure people are healthy
in what they eat, making sure we hold people and
corporations accountable for the damage they do
not only to our environment but to our institutions."

what we failed to accomplish in the last 15, we
would do well to focus on democratizing structures

counts. They count because we value every human life.

focus on money and power may do wonders in the marketplace,
but it creates a tremendous crisis in our society.
People who have spent all day learning how to sell

Many Americans hunger for a different kind of society

the real focus in this country has not been on the
rest of the world. It's been on our own issues and
our own problems. Fair enough. But it means that
our simple hopes that everything will just work
out abroad aren't really coming to pass.
And there are so many people in the third world suffering
so horribly right now, and we are so focused on ourselves
and our culture that a lot of things are showing up
in our culture that are making it impossible for us
to focus on others. We're so self-focused.

If we can evolve beyond that problem, then I think
there's some chance that we could retire the whole
institution of war and begin to focus on the peaceful
evolution of humanity.

be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic.
It is based on the fact that human history is a
history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion,
sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to
emphasize in this complex history will determine
our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys
our capacity to do something. If we remember those
times and places -- and there are so many -- where
people have behaved magnificently, this gives us
the energy to act, and at least the possibility
of sending this spinning top of a world in a different
direction. And if we do act, in however small a
way, we don't have to wait for some grand utopian
future. The future is an infinite succession of
presents, and to live now as we think human beings
should live, in defiance of all that is bad around
us, is itself a marvelous victory.
